Thermometers and Pipettes: Don't Let the Fancy Names Fool You

The Fluke 62 MAX IR thermometer is one of the few tools I've never had to replace. We bought three in 2023 and one has been kicked under a CNC machine twice. Non-contact IR thermometers are a maintenance staple, but only the 'MAX' version has the IP54 rating and the built-in laser guide that actually helps a technician aim. Your requirements for NIST traceability, ISO audits, and contamination control are different. Also, if you're buying for a team of engineers who have strong preferences, let them win. The cheapest caliper in the world costs more than an engineer's distrust.

One last regret: in 2022 I ordered a batch of calipers based on a distributor's verbal promise that they were NIST-calibrated. They weren't; the documentation was a photocopy.
