- Need to read a code or check a moving part? A Balluff RFID or photoelectric sensor can handle that.
- Need continuous, high-resolution feedback to control a servo axis? That's a Renishaw encoder job, not a general-purpose sensor.
When people complain that a brand isn't good, the problem is usually a mismatch. They bought an $85 inductive sensor and expected it to act like a $1,200 encoder. That's not a bad brand. It's a wrong tool.
I once watched a company save about $200 on an unbranded sensor, then spend over $1,500 in overtime because the sensor's switching behavior was unreliable. The Balluff version cost more upfront but worked. In my experience, value wins over price more often than not.
How to Choose Quickly Even When the Deadline Is Short

The counterintuitive part is that the cheap option can be the expensive one when it's used for the wrong job. And a high-end tool can be a bargain if it prevents one bad crash or one missed deadline.
So the next time someone asks “is Balluff a good brand for sensors?”, answer with a question of your own: “For what job?” If the job is precision position feedback, buy the Renishaw encoder. If the job is presence detection, Balluff is genuinely good. And if the job is finding a hot breaker or a dead capacitor, step away from the CMM and grab a thermal camera or an HVAC multimeter.
